November 5 is Liberty Men’s Wrestling first competition. They will travel to Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and wrestle in the Messiah Invitational. Being more than a month deep into practices, the team is ready to compete this next weekend.

Last week the team had preliminary weigh ins. Preliminary weigh ins are held on a specific day before their matches where athletes must be weighed. The preliminary weigh ins are meant to hold wrestlers accountable for their weight loss or gains. They are meant to keep athletes on track to meet their weight for their weight class.

After Liberty Men’s Wrestling went through preliminary weigh ins the team now knows if they need to step up their weight loss or gain game. The preliminary weigh ins are only one of the steps the team takes to get ready for matches.

The team is also taking other measures such as a lightened workload. The team doesn’t want to strain their bodies before the weekend, they want to preserve them. Not only preserve but upkeep them to the highest standard.

One of the ways that the athletes preserve their bodies is by going light on the weightlifting. Early in the season this practice isn’t as necessary because the team still wants to build strength. Lowering reps or sets is a way the team doesn’t strain themselves as much.

The team also does more match style practice drills to enhance their skill sets.

One of the other themes carrying the team throughout the season is their motto “my utmost for his highest” which is a book written by Oswald Chambers.

Oswald Chambers.

My Utmost For His Highest is a Christian Devotional book. The book provides daily “devotionals” or readings based on The Holy Bible. Why would this be part of the teams’ preparations?

Liberty Men’s Wrestling takes their faith very seriously. As a Christian University they believe that up keeping their spiritual relationship is just as important as taking care of their bodies.

More than just a mental mindset, the team’s relationship with the Lord deems very valuable. So valuable they put it on a shirt.

As a daily reminder that their bodies aren’t their own, the team shirts are a practical reminder of that.

The team has a much larger group of wrestlers than previous years. This means they are force to take the bus as means of transportation to Mechanicsburg for their matches.
